hummm so the devil can’t hear
is an interactive assemblage of archive materials, symbols/icons, printed matter and sound embedded with instructions on fugitivity, Black rebellion, and a new grapevine taking shape. How do you grow a grapevine and how does the vine spread for a fresh ecology that can feed the community it flows through? Are there literal and metaphorical recipes for wellness that folx have passed down /or been cultivating that will outlast capitalism? hummm so the devil can’t hear is a repository space of possibilities that will connect us in remembering our past present future ghosts, dreams, tools and wellness strategies. Hollerin Space offers a temporal landscape to imagine how we bridge our well being to one another.

with our personal studio spaces designed as sharing locations we will approach virtual world as interactive performance space. Let's navigate what virtual sharing + art processing could look like using the tools of the internet and a personal devotion to our studio work tools. We will spend this course developing our own virtual avatars using old school audio video recording and dubbing techniques and performance practices and sharing them.

LUX radio : House of Lux

two icons, bandanna and hoodie are deconstructed noise legends, sacred armour objects transmitting frequency between each other. Attendees are invited to walk around them and given instructions for making an altar of new frequency. We are deranging imposed architectures and we offer our interference in practice for something else. On the one hand the state of Maryland is holding our cousin Derek Thompson who have been locked up for over half his life while our family in grief at the losses have been living with their kinfolk locked away. On another hand the state of Arkansas have been raping the land for centuries and our family land is always at risk whether through violent civilian or state work. And then again the state of Pennsylvania invested funds into policing Black and Brown people in North Central Philadelphia while divesting funds from our care during an extended period of time they created, marketed and publicized called the crack epidemic the AIDS epidemic the war on drugs and the war on crime in our communities and with our people. Were the residents of Kensington asked if they wanted open drug use rampant in their already blighted neighborhood. These violences have not been reconciled. HOLD ON is a time out of time dream legend- part fleshy culture, part viral interactive portal. House of Lux is our hollerin pot.

What are our collective rituals to grieve land theft and loss?
What have been our tools to restore and ground ourselves in the grips of dispossession?
What becomes of our fragmented memories of place and home?
How do we honor what remains?
How do we make space to dream something anew?

sweet smoke and the intimacy of forgetting: LUXradio channel processes the effects of dispossession and land loss by making a burning ritual to reshape collective memory.

This channel takes place in Lambrook, a rural community in the Arkansas Delta, situated between the Mississippi and White River. Stewarded by the Quapaw and Osage, it was colonized by the French and Spanish to later become a predominantly Black community of sharecroppers and farmers. It had a storefront, post office, and fabled to have once had its own all Black baseball team. Due to outright trickery or shady tax liens practices or pushed out from a lack of jobs, less than a handful of Black families now remain.

In the late 90's, ADJ and her family returned to Lambrook, living with the land and restoring her grandmother’s garden in hopes of creating a sanctuary for anyone who may need a place of rest. Since that time, the community and land radically change under mono cropping, misuse of water sources, land grabs, deforestation, and the structure they lived in "half a house" has deteriorated. The dream has yet to be fully realized.

A barn raising in reverse, sweet smoke and the intimacy of forgetting: LUXradio channel seeks to process questions of place and home by dismantling and burning the “half a house” while being intentional in community. It becomes an effort to create a regenerative ritual of reclamation, remembrance, and to make a pathway for restoration.

Lambrook is a site in the multi-dimensional LUXradio created within the work HOLD ON. We will activate this site through gathering with family, recording and documenting with film and sound to add it to our deconstructed radio frequencies.

DISREMEMBERing - rememory

Course type:  cross disciplinary praxis seminar

Number of students: 12 people

Course Description:

This course is about technologies of Black space formed in frameworks of violence. Our cohort will mine the city archives for public records defining the emergence of North Philadelphia's current social architectural layout. Juxtaposing our research in institutions, we will be walking and biking Lenapehoking travel routes and waterways, and deconstructing the colonial project through the lens of the bureaucratic blighting and subsequent gentrification of North Central in the wake of the Black rebellion of 1964. We will develop projects that put us in continuity with public memories of abolition, migration, mutual aid, porch sitting, neighborhood festivals, and cultural organizing as means of neighborliness and Black social life. By having to endure governmental decisions waging domestic war and violence in local communities, mass local mourning [1960s - 2000s] took the form of squatting/outdoor altars/shrines/memory rituals organized and performed by residents. With urban planning in high gear and the war on drugs nearly 40 years past, we will re engage the long memory work of resident artists, worker organizers, cultural workers, and educators performing, disrupting, deconstructing, and forming social possibilities. Research of fact, memory, and imagination should yield questions, leading to the development and practice of methods for our cohort. Course readings, watching films, and looking at images will aid us in contextualizing the cultural work of Black geographies with social power and political movement. Students will keep a journal of their walking life, complete photographic essay assignments, conduct oral histories, and collaborate for group exhibition of their work.

For our 3-week workshop we will cultivate individual walking practices, enhancing body awareness, of flesh,  environment, atmosphere, weather,  noise,
perception, listening quality and place. We will record ambient sound material in our walks using the audio recording devices provided by the workshop. Then
we will come together and share + swap + record + archive our sound and conversations of beauty, curiosity and tension reflecting the practices of walking
and listening.

We will edit our material with Audacity and Ableton softwares to co create sonic scapes with moods articulating our growing awareness and presence for walking. Our aim is to be translating feeling through sound.  Sonic scapes will be programmatic material for sound walks for future walkers.

House of Lux (2023) is the myth and provocation for a QTBIPOC accessible Pangea culture of ME WE US OURS  care values and practice for a world with love and accountability, without police and prisons, with neighbors and cousins trading maps, stories, recipes, remedies, libations and provisions. Our sound is a migrating noise legend reminiscent of the Black folk who raised us while living through the violent spatial conditions of U.S. imperialism and globalization in 1970s - 2000s North Philadelphia. Between us, our aim is for what Toni Morrison named the source of self regard. What James Brown called attitude. And what Andaiye called neighborliness.
